If you need a dose of reality or a good cry, then read one of Donald Goines books. In his book Inner City Hoodlum it is about three teenage boys trying to survive the best way they know how. Without the help of adult supervision, they rob train cars to make a living. In the process of that they have to deal with protecting a younger sister from the hands of a pimp and numbers runner, trying not to get caught and go to jail, and all the other frustrations and challenges from being young and on your own. Donald Gones has a way of writing about the lives of young people that's gritty realistic and pulls at your heart. I loved reading his books. I used to read them when I was in high school, they will make you laugh or cry or do both. The characters are well-developed, and the story is a quick read that will pull you in from the first page. Don't sleep on Donald Goines books they are just that good. After I finish one of his book I always say Damn you Donald for making me cry once again.
Happy Reading
